Funerals
If you recently lost a loved one, our hearts and prayers go out to you during this time of grief. Jesus himself grieved over the loss of his friend, Lazarus. Grief is therefore, not un-Christian. The very love we have for each other brings deep sorrow when we are parted by death.
A funeral service holds space for the living and the dead to remember the promise of the resurrection. Because Jesus was raised from the dead, we too will be raised from the dead. Funeral services are therefore rooted in the promise of the resurrection. In the face of real grief, we hold fast to Christ’s promise:
“I am Resurrection and I am Life, says the Lord.
Whoever has faith in me shall have life,
even though he die.
And everyone who has life,
and has committed himself to me in faith,
shall not die for ever.
— Book of Common Prayer, p. 491
During a burial service we hold fast to the promise once written by Paul to the Romans: “For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation shall separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:38).
St. Mark’s is honored to hold a burial service for your loved one. Parishioners may request a funeral service at St. Mark’s.
